A quick look at some of the most common eye diseases diagnosed and often treated at Eyecare Elements in Bellevue
“Eye diseases” is a blanket term that refers to a host of diseases relating to the function of the eye. Below we describe some of the more common types of eye diseases and how they are generally treated. For more in-depth information, please speak with your eye care provider at Eyecare Elements.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)
Conjunctivitis, also known as ‘pink eye’, is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva – the thin, protective membrane that covers the surface of the eyeball and inner surface of the eyelids. Caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens and other irritants like smoke and dust, pink eye is highly contagious and is usually accompanied by redness in the white of the eye and increased tearing and/or discharge.
While many minor cases improve with minor treatment, some can develop into serious corneal inflammation and threaten sight. If you suspect conjunctivitis, visit your eye doctor at Eyecare Elements for a thorough examination.
Diabetic Eye Disease
Unfortunately, diabetes continues to be the leading cause of blindness in North America. Diabetes can result in a variety of changes in the eyes. The changes can be a simple as inconsistent or fluctuating vision or as vision threatening as bleeding in the eye or glaucoma. The American Diabetic Association recommends annual eye exams with special attention to the area’s most vulnerable to diabetic damage for all people with diabetes. It is also possible that the first sign that you have diabetes is discovered by your eye doctor.
The skilled doctors at Eyecare Elements take the time to thoroughly examine the exams in order to detect the earliest signs of diabetic eye disease. We work closely with your endocrinologist or managing doctor to insure holistic care of your eye health and vision.
Known as ‘the silent thief of vision’, glaucoma can often exist without you even knowing you have it. Glaucoma is a disease that causes slow damage to the optic nerve which serves to send visual input to the brain. In glaucoma, the fibers making up the optic nerve begin to ‘die off’. The fibers which are most susceptible to damage tend to originate from the peripheral retina. As these fibers are lost so is the vision in a specific portion of the peripheral vision. Left untreated glaucoma can cause a progressive loss of the fibers and thus complete vision loss.
Comprehensive eye examinations at Eyecare Elements include the assessment of glaucoma status. The highly-trained doctors at Eyecare Elements excel at early detection and treatment of many types of glaucoma.
A truly life altering condition, macular degeneration can rob you of your central vision. Macular Degeneration or Age Related Macular Degeneration or ARMD, it is the leading cause of blindness over the age of 65. This hereditary condition is often diagnosed during comprehensive annual exams.
Early detect and preventative measures are the key to minimizing vision loss with this disease.
Our doctors are experts in the early detection and diagnosis of this and many other eye health conditions.
